AbstractIn 2006, this author decided to make multiple intelligences (MI)-inspired "activity menus" a regular part of her ESOL/Civics classes. She first tried this technique in a single class session to review what students had learned about industrialization, and it was a huge success. Since 2006, the author has introduced MI-inspired activity menus to instructors throughout The City University of New York's Adult Literacy/ESL/GED Program and collected sample lessons and teacher responses. The approach has been appealing because MI-inspired activity menus provide an engaging way for students with multiple levels of ability to summarize what they have learned. Activity menus allow the teacher to model civic participation by creating a more student-centered classroom; they allow students to take responsibility for their own learning; and their use fosters instructional strategies--such as active learning, community building, and self-efficacy--that have been found to improve student persistence.
