AbstractYoung children who are born deaf or hard of hearing are at risk for language and emergent literacy challenges. Emergent literacy skills play a significant role in early reading abilities for typically developing children with hearing. The purpose of this article is to (a) provide an overview of the research relating to oral language and emerging literacy skills for young children who are deaf or hard of hearing and (b) discuss home literacy environment factors (e.g., activities in the home, joint book reading) that can support oral language and emergent literacy development for this population of young children. In doing so, this article offers practical suggestions for early childhood professionals as they collaborate with parents who are hearing and have young children who are deaf or hard of hearing to support their children's oral language and emergent literacy skills in the home environment before entering kindergarten.
