AbstractAs communication technologies change, so do libraries. Library instruction programs are now focused on teaching information literacy, a term that may just as well be referred to as information "literacies." The new media age involves information in a wide variety of mediums. Educators everywhere are realizing media's power to communicate and influence, and are teaching students how to take on more responsibility for and control over their own learning. People live in an era of visual culture which influences their attitudes, beliefs, values and life-styles. Visual literacy is about both interpreting images and producing images. In this article, the author discusses the importance of giving children the opportunity to experiment with graphic software so they may discover how much manipulation of an image there can be. The author stresses the need for teachers and librarians to take advantage of the way students entertain themselves today. Librarians can be ideal facilitators of new forms of information, research, and expression. He added that in education, electronic media is increasingly taking a center place in the curricula and as media and visualizations continue to change, media and visual literacy become part of a lifelong educational process.
