Abstract	Henry Jenkins, director of the Comparative Media Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and keynote speaker at the 2007 American Library Association's "Gaming, Learning and Libraries Symposium" in Chicago is a visionary leader in the areas of new media and media convergence. In a white paper on digital media and learning entitled "Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: media education for the 21st century," Jenkins et al. defined participatory culture as "a culture with relatively low barriers to artistic expression and civic engagement, strong support for creating and sharing one's creations, and some type of information mentorship where by what is known by the most experienced is passed along to novices." Participatory culture shifts the focus of literacy from one of individual expression to community involvement, one which supports widespread participation in the production and distribution of media. Another major work by Jenkins is "Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide." Here participatory culture is taken to the next level by defining the relationship between three concepts--media convergence, participatory culture, and collective intelligence. Jenkins emphasizes that educators, including librarians, must help incorporate media literacy across the curriculum so as to develop a student's skills that are needed to be full participants in society.
