AbstractCultural and ethnic diversity in the United States has been significantly increasing in the past few decades. This growth is greatly reflected in schools in the U. S. where children come from very diverse backgrounds. With the country's expanding relationships with other nations across the world, the need for children to view themselves as members of a multicultural, global community is heightened. There is an increasing need for diverse perspectives in education. Incorporating multicultural literature in classrooms will broaden children's perspectives and enhance their understanding of diversity in a pluralistic society. In this article, the author discusses the collaborative effort made by a university professor from the University of South Florida (USF) and the library media specialist at Egypt Lake Elementary School who teamed up with the reading resource teacher at the school, along with the librarian from the Egypt Lake Partnership Public Library to write an internal USF grant. The grant was called "Tampa Bay Community Multi-cultural Outreach: Exploring Diversity through Cinderella Stories." This grant allowed the purchase of multiple copies of many versions of the Cinderella folktale for use by the school's reading resource teacher to support cultural sensitivity and a love for reading, to encourage collaborative efforts among educators, as well as collaboration with the university and the public library.
