AbstractMusic educators understand the importance of the arts in schools. Other members of the school community--teachers, administrators, and parents--may share this view, yet be unaware of all that transpires in the music classroom once the door is shut. Music educators should consider how they can open their doors to help the community understand how music education contributes to broad educational goals. Developing effective strategies to do so necessitates understanding the views and perspectives of others. Answers to certain questions can help teachers develop strategies for promoting music programs more effectively. Are principals' perceptions of the music program aligned with what is actually happening? What do they consider to be the most important goals for music instruction in their schools? What do general classroom teachers consider to be important aspects of the music program? Researchers have asked these questions because knowledge of constituents' current perceptions about music's purpose in the school curriculum is fundamental for effectively planning a course of action. Music educators should consider strategies that effectively highlight the transferability of skills, processes behind musical outcomes, and musical achievements of students. Awareness of this transferability can help teachers and principals understand how music strengthens the overall goals of a liberal education. (Contains 24 notes.) (ERIC).
