Abstract | Examines open-ended questionnaire and follow-up interview data obtained from students and teachers in an investigation into the development of students' academic writing in a university English language curriculum. Extensive evidence from interview data shows that people not only forgot what they had written a few months earlier on the questionnaires, but that they were frequently uncertain about what they meant at the time.
