| Abstract | In this article, the author uses the phrase, "unfamiliar teachers," to describe teachers who are unfamiliar with accuracies regarding Native American ethnographic background or contemporary life. Herein, she advocates for a perspective through which unfamiliar teachers can negotiate their first year of teaching art in Native American high-density communities and develop an art teaching method grounded in a recognition of ideologies that vary from widely accepted mainstream assumptions. The article begins with perspectives on the deconstruction of Native American presences in the motion picture industry. These perspectives are presented as a background rationale behind engaging the visual culture of the cinematic medium. The author then suggests 10 reasons "why" the unfamiliar teacher might consider integrating filmmaking into her or his first-year experience with Native American student populations by identifying parallels between traditional oral storytelling and filmmaking.
