AbstractThis paper is comprised of two essays by the same author. The first essay, "Reading and Writing," refers to two books written by Dan Koeppel as an introduction to the topic of plagiarism in education and the temptation that both educators and students face to cheat. A "Big Lister" is described by Dan Koeppel in his book, "To See Every Bird On Earth; A Father, A Son and a Lifelong Obsession," as someone with enough sightings of birds to encompass virtually every bird in the world. Unlike birders, Big Listers seem to have no interest in birds they have already seen. The temptation must exist to cheat, but Koeppel insists that Big Listers play it straight even though there is no monetary penalty or government oversight. Public pressure suffices. This contrasts markedly with what takes place in what is loosely deemed education in the United States. The essay describes several examples of how universities and teachers attempt to avoid plagiarism and cheating on tests, as well as how some teachers were caught aiding their students in cheating. The second essay, "Impact/Retract," discusses the connection between high impact factor (IF) journals and a higher retraction index. The pressure on a researcher to publish in high IF journals is extremely high. Having a consistent record of "high-impact" publications is required in order to find employment as a scientist. The pressure to modify results in a study in order to obtain a higher IF so that a journal will agree to publish an article might be one of several factors resulting in the massive rise of retractions over the last decade.
