AbstractSol University has been striving to obtain the high-quality faculty necessary to become a national research tier-one (R1) university. If the university cannot recruit the necessary faculty by the 2020 deadline, then Sol University will not achieve the goal of becoming an R1 university. The problem addressed in this research was the recruitment and retention of tenured and tenure-track (T/TT) faculty at Sol University. The purpose of the study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of T/TT faculty at Sol University. A qualitative case study method design was chosen as it allowed for a comprehensive understanding of the two main research questions: (1) why did the faculty interviewed chose Sol University? and (2) why do they remain there? The research included comprehensive semi-structured interviews with current T/TT faculty at the university with no familial ties to the area and a minimum of three years and maximum of 10 years being T/TT at the university. Interviews were transcribed and member checking was conducted to ensure accuracy of the data obtained. Consistent with Maslow and McClellan theories of motivation, participants in this study were motivated to accept a position at Sol University to meet their own personal needs. In addition, T/TT faculty remain at the university as employment there continues to satisfy their needs for affiliation, power and/or self-actualization. To achieve R1 university status, administration and leaders at Sol University may have to make some changes in their current priority of being a teaching university to provide existing T/TT faculty more opportunities to conduct research and seek avenues for their personal professional development goals. Future researchers may want to interview T/TT faculty considered experts in their field who have been with the university longer than 10 years to determine why they chose to remain there.
