Abstract | African American male student achievement has been a topic of interest for some time within the field of education (Angelle & Teague, 2014; Gamoran, 2001; Herrnstein, 1973; Jensen, 1969; Klar & Brewer, 2013; Land et al., 2014; Scarr, 1992; Terman, 1916; Wiggan, 2007; West et al., 2000). Through this topic of interest, it can be concluded that there is an overwhelming amount of research pertaining to African American males' lack of achievement, which leads to the inquiry of how school leaders influence African American male student achievement (Ballantine, 2001; Desimone, 1999; Ford, Wright, Grantham, & Harris, 1998; Gamoran, 2001; Gardner, 1993; Goings & Bianco, 2016; Hillard, 1995; Huang, 2016; Jencks & Phillips, 1998; Kozol, 2006; D. Moore, 1999; Rhoden, 2017; Steel & Aronson, 1998). The purpose of this collective case study was to explore the influence that high school leaders have on African American male student achievement. In this study, there were two schools examined. One school had a predominantly African American school leadership as defined by principal, assistant principal, school counselor, and teacher. The other school had a predominantly White school leadership with the same definition as the previously stated school. The goal is to add to the literature by serving as a tool that school leaders can utilize to better support African American male student achievement.
