AbstractSchool construction completed in 2006 totaled just more than $20 billion, a drop of seven percent from the record $21.6 billion put in place in 2005. Even so, it was the sixth year in the last seven that annual construction exceeded $20 billion. During the seven years of the present century, school districts have completed construction projects totaling more than $145 billion. The slowdown in 2006 was not unexpected. The previous year had been a difficult one between problems with weather and the precipitous rise in the price of oil and construction materials. It was expected that those problems would be reflected in the following year and they were. But while construction slowed in 2006, projections for 2007 indicate that school construction will rise again; 2006 appears almost to have been a year where school construction paused to take a deep breath before plunging ahead. These are among findings of "School Planning & Management"'s 12th Annual School Construction Report compiled in partnership with Market Data Retrieval, a company of D&B. Market Data Retrieval gathers information for this report from mailed and e-mailed survey forms and telephone calls to every school district in the United States. Information is gathered on individual projects during a three- and four-year period as each project progresses from planned construction to completion. Each follow-up contact is designed to elicit more detailed and refined information on costs, size, and facilities. "School Planning & Management" takes the raw information and compiles it into national and regional estimates. Estimates are based on the point in each project when data was gathered, the number and percentage of districts responding, and size and location of districts. This report provides an overview of national statistics on school construction completed in 2006, school construction currently underway, projections for 2007, and an analysis of 12-year trends. Additionally, figures are given for each of the 12 regions of the United States. The figures show the total amount of construction activity by year and how that money was spent, on new schools, additions or renovations. They also show by year what percentage of money in each region goes into elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and district projects. Finally, for new schools only the median cost per square foot, cost per student and square foot per student for elementary schools, middle schools and high schools in each region are shown. [For the 2006 report, see ED565271.] (ERIC).
