AbstractThe Operations Evaluation Department (OED) assesses the programs and activities of the World Bank for two purposes: (1) to ensure the integrity of the World Bank's self-evaluation process and to verify that their work effort is producing the expected results; and (2) to help develop improved directions, policies, and procedures through the dissemination of lessons drawn from experience. A Project Performance Assessment Report (PPAR) is based on a review of the Implementation Committee Report (a self-evaluation by the responsible Bank department) and fieldwork conducted by the OED. This PPAR covers the two completed education projects in the Maldives: (1) Education and Training Project (Credit 1981--Maldives), and (2) Second Education and Training Project (Credit 2701 MAL). The PPAR contains the five sections: (1) "Principal Ratings"; (2) "Key Staff Responsible"; (3) "Preface" (Background; Objectives and Implementation of the Assessed Projects; Ratings; Issues for Future Consideration); (4) "Annex A. Project Activities"; and (5) "Annex B. Basic Data Sheet." The report finds that the fellowships program funded under the two projects brought about considerable benefits in terms of human resource development and that the vast majority of recipients voluntarily returned and assumed positions of responsibility in the government and the private sector. It notes that, for both projects, outcome is rated highly satisfactory. (BT)
