| Abstract | This publication is comprised of selected data taken from the July 1999 (third) edition of "World Data on Education" (WDE). The publication is in line with the International Bureau of Education's (IBE's) long tradition of disseminating useful information about school systems. The main section of the publication consists of concise descriptions of the structure of the formal education system in 144 countries, including available statistical figures concerning primary education. Chapters are: (1) "The Structure of National Education Systems"; (2) "The Duration of Primary or Basic Education"; (3) "Time Devoted to Teaching During Primary or Basic Education"; and (4) "Teaching Subjects During the First Four Years of Primary or Basic Education." Summary tables focusing on aspects of primary and basic education programs are given. Contains a glossary and a list of Web sites intended to give readers a general idea of the potential of the World Wide Web in terms of access to educational data and resources, in particular as far as official sources are concerned.
