AbstractThis paper discusses three topics related to the issue of the changing environment for community colleges. It first explores the market forces impacting community colleges and how these forces affect organizational design. Second, the tensions that reside within community colleges and act as impediments to change are addressed. The internal tension and intensifying market forces are contradictory in nature. Third, the model of a contradictory college is discussed in some detail. A contradictory college is one that is capable of managing tradition while simultaneously creating revolutionary change and learning from both experiences. A contradictory college will allow different dimensions of change to coexist, thereby providing room for development. The discussions entailed in the paper do not provide the single model for the future, but encourage different ways of thinking about what community colleges need to do if they are to remain vital in the market economy and serve all students well.
