AbstractThe report presents results of a 1-year project whose purposes were to explore issues surrounding service provision to families with developmentally disabled members, to assess the status of family support programs nationwide, and to apply this information to the task of developing a family support program in Virginia. Part 1 reflects findings of the overview phase of the study, discussing trends identified in the literature, results of a 50-state survey, and highlights of six state case studies. It also includes a detailed assessment of the major decisions that must be made in the design of family support policy. Part 2 includes information relevant to the formation of family support policy in Virginia. It begins with the findings of a survey of Virginia families who have developmentally disabled family members, continues with a summary of the deliberations of a conference on family support issues in the state, and ends with a series of specific recommendations for the implementation of discrete family support demonstrations. Appendices include a bibliography, interview guide used during site visits, descriptions of six state family support programs, and a Virginia survey questionnaire on family needs.(JW)
