| Abstract | A study examined whether mass media exposure is a unidimensional, bidimensional, or multidimensional construct as reflected in commonly used indicators of exposure. Telephone interviews were conducted with 534 households to determine media exposure. A structural equation model was proposed to account for the dimensionality of mass media exposure, the relationship among the identified dimensions, the reliability of the indicators, and the measurement errors involved. Results indicated that the hypothesized multidimensional construct provided the best fit. They also showed that the commonly used indicators of mass media exposure had a statistically significant relationship with their respective constructs, though the indicators exhibited both random and nonrandom measurement error. The results of this study suggest that many of the contradictory results relating mass media exposure to various outcome variables may be due to varying degrees of measurement error, and that more attention should be placed on the assessment of the extant measures of mass media exposure and the development of more adequate ones.
