AbstractThis handbook was developed for teachers with hearing impaired students in their regular classrooms. A preliminary discussion on hearing impairments describes various degrees of aural handicaps, ranging from deafness to hard of hearing, and communication methods used in educating children with these handicaps. Activities for preparing nonhandicapped children to understand the special problems of the deaf or hard of hearing are described. Suggestions are made for introducing the handicapped child to future classmates and establishing methods of classroom communication. Suggestions are also made on modifications which can be made in the classroom's physical arrangement. Instructional methods, such as frequent use of visual aids in presenting lessons, are described, and recommendations are made on the kinds of special assistance that are available to the teacher in augmenting the aurally handicapped student's learning experience. A bibliography of books for children, parents, and teachers and a list of further resources are included. (JD)
