AbstractThe article concerns the concept of "transculturality" and some of its implications for literature teaching in EFL-contexts. In the first part the focus is on Wolfgang Welsch's definition of the term. According to Welsch, "transculturality" stands for cultural hybridisation in a globalised world. For him, the concept is a highly productive new paradigm which should help overcome nationalist concepts of culture. Also, he has placed his approach in opposition to "interculturality," which he views as an outmoded intercultural-learning perspective. Such assessment is problematic, since "interculturality" also includes a transcultural dimension. Thus, Welsch's opposition is deconstructed to give both approaches due credit for their work on culture formation and to encourage a dialogue between the two. Moreover, attention is drawn to the limitations of Welsch's understanding of "transculturality" to make the concept more inclusive of the diverse and manifold modalities of cultural mixing. As a result, a differentiated concept of "transculturality" is introduced. In the second part of the article this concept is linked to literature and literature teaching. First, the focus is on how literary texts have dealt with issues related to "transculturality." Secondly, the concept is discussed as an invitation to bring English Studies and ELT up-to-date with the global and multilingual dimension of anglophone literatures. Finally, the author's concept of reader response is compared to Welsch's notion of "transculturality." As is shown, the two share important convictions. Moreover, an aesthetic text approach as suggested by reception aesthetics is rich in potential for reflective and insightful cultural mixing. (Verlag, adapt.).
