| Abstract | The business community holds English to be indispensible, much as it argues that 'globalization' is inevitable. Neoliberal developments in international higher education are encouraging the gatekeeper function of English. Coupled with 'communication skills' English is shaping this 'global world'. The discourse of English as a lingua franca and intercultural communication is widespread, leading to sustained English influence on other languages and cultures. The adoption of Anglo-American interaction norms is setting limits to interculturality. English as an academic lingua franca is diminishing local cultures. Some implications for ELT are discussed. Notions of a common core for English are invalid in the face of new varieties. Teachers need to accept their responsibility as educators and to reflect upon their current roles in a corporately globalized world. (Verlag). |
