Abstract	In this article, the author first reviews research on academic achievement and discusses the three groups of factors that have been examined as contributing to academic performance: the psychological or individual context (e. g. intelligence, achievement motivation); the family context (sociocultural backgrounds, gender etc.); the school context. The author then reports his empirical study in the United Arab Emirates and mainly "addresses gender differences in achievement. The way the Arab culture treats boys is different from its treatment of girls. The differential treatment seems to have differential effect on motivation and achievement of boys and girls. The study ... shows that girls outperform boys in almost every measured variable; and that expatriate children outperform national children in almost every meqasured variable." (DIPF/Bi.).
