| Abstract | The authors first point to the current situation in the region which shows "a generally bleak picture of a descending spiral of unsustainable development". The remainder of the article describes and analyses the "educational responses". i. e. the state policies concerning environmental education and the integration of it into the curricula. Key findings from an empirical study are cited which show that "much remains to be done to ensure that education ... is reoriented towards sustainability." The findings relate to: "levels of student awareness and interest; the learning of appropriate concepts; and the willingness and ability of students to adopt sustainable lifestyle behaviours and to share civic responsibility for sustainable development activities."
