Abstract	This study is concerned with the ways in which a dozen "knowledge- based societies" of Western Europe and the English-speaking world respond to unprecedented cultural and linguistic diversity resulting from the flow of immigrants and refugees since World War II. It asks how public policy has sought to use schooling to minimize the potentially divisive and inequitable effects of this diversity, and to provide opportunities to the children of immigrants. It asks also how the nature of each of these societies affects the meaning of integration into each of them. (...) The study employs a comparative perspective, showing how similarities and differences among the policies of different countries and among the experiences of different language minority groups illuminate the policy choices. It is based upon very extensive documentation, including both formal studies and periodical literature from each of the countries, as well as upon many discussions and observations by the authors in schools serving language minority language children. These school observations have extended to all of the countries discussed, with the exception of Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This volume comprises chapters one to six with the following headers: 1) Strangers among us: children of immigrants in school; 2) Immigration: causes and responses; 3) Indigenous language minority groups; 4) Immigrants and host society; 5) The languages of immigrants; 6) Separate development (in the countries examined).
