Abstract | After decades of apartheid and conflict fuelled by South Africa's destabilisation of its neighbours, what are the prospects for Southern Africa's children? Can the region, in a new era of peace, cooperation and democratic transformation, heal the wounds and overcome the losses of war? Can Southern Africans now move decisively to improve the health, nutrition, and education of their children, creating the conditions for a prosperous and productive future? What are the key policies, and what are the roles of civil society and governments, in making this happen? In this publication, Southern African researchers and other development practitioners examine the complex legacies that apartheid and destabilisation have left behind. Using country and community-level case studies, they look both at the obstacles to progress imposed by that legacy, and at many positive examples from the region of advancement in key sectors for children and women. The following issues are described: 1) Transforming education, 2) reading the goals of good health and untrition, 3) involving communities and civil society, 4) securing rights and rehabilitation for children and women, 5) children in the post-apartheid economy.
