| Abstract | L2 reading is a highly complex endeavor in which many resources need to be coordinated skillfully. In this process of meaning construction, L2 readers often rely on their knowledge of individual words occurring in the texts. Yet, in order to achieve deep-level comprehension, not only the textual surface needs to be deciphered, but also its conceptual depths. The present paper therefore suggests the terms 'lexical awareness' and 'conceptual awareness' to highlight the different depths of comprehension connected to individual words and expressions. The constructs have been developed on the basis of an extensive review of the pertinent literature and been tested against a comprehensive video corpus of L2 reader data. The qualitative and quantitative results illustrate the multifaceted and complementary nature of these two constructs and their relevance in the comprehension process. Finally, theoretical and practical implications are discussed and recommendations for future research are provided as well. (Verlag, adapt.). |
