| Abstract | German pre-service teachers studying a modern foreign language are increasingly required to study or work abroad during the first phase of their teaching training. These oftentimes intense and transformative stays abroad are frequently followed by a challenging reentry phase. In Germany however, only very little research has been done in this area. With the help of a focus group interview with five teacher students, the results that are based on a qualitative content analysis show that participants faced significant reentry challenges, especially with regard to identity and other cognitive processes. Their time reintegrating into their home environment and continuing their education was often marked by sadness, a sense of loss and practical problems. Despite their desire to reflect on and discuss their reentry experience with others, in their view the university should not provide support measures such as reentry seminars. Possible consequences for teacher training in Germany and future research are discussed. (Verlag, adapt.). |
