Abstract | In Saudi Arabia, students with disabilities have benefited from the government's commitment to improve access to education services through the least restrictive environment services. This study investigated the preparedness and perceptions of current Saudi teachers who instruct children with disabilities in a PE setting including a comparison to US teachers. Teachers rated their undergrad experiences with disabilities, their difficulty in including students with disabilities in their classes, and barriers that might affect inclusion. The two most frequently encountered disabilities in Saudi Arabia were auditory and learning disabilities. Teachers in both countries felt that their undergrad classes and field experiences were least adequate for teaching children on the autism spectrum. Further, those children presented Saudi teachers with the most difficulty to incorporate in class; for US teachers, children with behavioral disabilities were the most difficult to include followed by those on the autism spectrum. The greatest barrier for Saudi teachers was lack of adaptive equipment followed by administrative support; US teachers cited large class sizes and lack of equipment as their greatest barriers. Suggestions for improvement included additional undergraduate preparation and exposure, incentives for further training, greater administrative involvement and funding, and additional support personnel.
