| Abstract | When using small-sided games, in addition to modifying the size of the surface of play, the number of players and certain rules, teachers and coaches have at times planned the intervention of additional players invested with specific roles in order to force new dynamics into game play. In this paper, these additional players are named "support players". To illustrate the teaching process and the learning strategies resulting from the use of support players, the paper presents a series of five exercises in ice hockey. With such problem-solving situations, players can analyse how they play the game, discuss tactical choices among themselves, reflect on their game play and eventually come up with innovative action rules. The intent of such exercises is to have students experience the advantage and / or difficulties inherent to each specific condition of play and to progressively discover which condition appears more efficient. The appearance of a support player on each team creates a disturbance that all players, attackers and defenders alike, need to take into consideration. Attackers may find that, under certain conditions, they benefit from the presence of a support player. For their part, defenders may find that some of their defensive manoeuvres are more likely to counterbalance the offense. In both cases, some conditions of play will emerge as being more effective and attractive. In a way, attractive configurations of play constructed under the "support player" mode may be seen as reference configurations to be reproduced as closely as possible under the normal rules of play.
