Abstract	This article provides an overview on the development of the concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Its structure is as following: After introducing the concept of ESD, the second chapter discusses the role of education on the basis of the concept of sustainability. It illustrates phases of institutionalization of ESD. The third chapter presents different forms of thematisation in ESD. In conclusion, the fourth chapter is concerned with current core areas of research on ESD in German-speaking countries. (DIPF/Orig.).
