AbstractAs digital game playing becomes more widespread globally, and digital games become more sophisticated and diverse, language educators are beginning to realize that there are potentials for digital game-mediated second and foreign language (L2) teaching and learning (TL). A new, legitimate, and potentially fruitful area of research and practice has emerged, informed by game studies, educational gaming, second language acquisition (SLA), and L2 pedagogy. This article reviews existing research on digital games as L2 learning environments, and then discusses three key notions - the use of vernacular games as L2TL resources, the development of game-based L2TL environments, and the 'gamification' of L2 learning curricula - along with some associated challenges and controversies. The article concludes by presenting a literacies-informed framework for game-mediated L2 pedagogy. (Verlag).
