| Abstract | This paper addresses the question of whether corrective feedback is feasible in group-to-group videoconferencing. We will report on a project in which Japanese learners of L2 German at Waseda University, Tokyo, and German students enrolled in an MA program of German as a Foreign Language at Humboldt University, Berlin, communicated via videoconferencing. After classifying the various interactions that appeared in our data into several groups, we will discuss the occurrences of different types of corrective feedback within the project's communicative setting of spontaneous interaction, including the reaction of the Japanese learners. We complement our analysis with a survey of the participants' perspectives via retrospective group interviews, essays and inquiries. In our data, we found mainly implicit types of feedback with other-completed repair. Such feedback was constrained by factors such as self-/other-initiation, salience and technique. Our results suggest that group-to-group videoconferencing can not only promote intercultural learning via authentic communication, but also language learning. (Verlag). |
