AbstractDigital learning objects and hypertexts are both constructed by aggregating elementary objects to complex objects. This aggregation principle is based on the idea that elementary objects could be reused in different contexts. To be reusable, however, hypertexts and digital learning objects have to be constructed as closed units with regard to form, content, and language. While it is common practice to concatenate the units of hypertexts with each other by hyperlinks, this practice is generally not recommended for prototypical elementary digital learning objects. On the one hand, authors of complex learning objects are thus, forced' to avoid one of the most central linking methods of hypertexts - although they have to cope with the task of constructing an aggregated complex object which is in many ways similar to a hypertext. On the other hand, learners have to be able to (re)construct the relationships between the different elementary learning objects, although these objects are built as modular and independent units. Both authors and recipients of digital learning objects therefore have to cope with problems in building or constructing a mental image of the entire course, especially its structure and the relations between its parts. These problems are not only of a didactic nature but also have to do with language - and consequently fall within the realm of linguistics. In the article, the construction and reception (i. e., understanding) of digital learning objects is analyzed from the perspective of text linguistics. It tries to advocate the position that learning objects are a challenging topic for linguists and that a linguistic perspective could help to clarify and overcome some of the problems connected with reusable learning objects.
