| Abstract | Achievement in schools can be looked at from different perspectives. The broadest perspective is perhaps required by governments and schooling authorities in many developed countries. Standardized tests of knowledge and skills in literacy, mathematics and science are administered at regular intervals. Some of these high-level surveys lead to international rankings of performance. On the other hand, there are in-class, small-scale informal and investigative assessments of the learning process, in what amounts to real time, of the individual student or pupil's growth to achievement. "Assessment here has a reality, an immediacy and a diagnostic value that is (or should be) palpable. [...] [This book] contains an analysis of the two sides, but more than that. It outlines how classroom assessment has changed - because it needed to. [...] The book deals with both of these perspectives. The order of development is from mass testing to the teacher and pupil in the classroom. [...] Two phrases in particular have become commonplace: assessment of learning and assessment for learning."
