Abstract	The report keeps records of the second International Workshop on Graduate Education, hosted by the Research Institute for Higher Education (RIHE) in Hiroshima University, part of the new research project on the reform of higher education in the knowledge based society of 21st century. The contributions provide an overview on the following main subjects: the global movements in research labour and doctor students (1); mission-oriented knowledge system in graduate schools (2); reform in European higher education with a focus on quality assurance (3) and recent reform in university education and its implications for student development in China (4).
