Abstract	Schoolbooks, seen as a mirror of their society, testify to the functions with which historical topics, at different times, have been and are still being charged regarding the historical understanding of the respective nation. This contribution describes an evaluation of illustrations in German and French schoolbook chapters about the Celts, the Romans and the Germanic tribes. After a brief introduction to the historical subject and a historical retrospect, the focus lies on the examination of examples from current schoolbooks and their chapters about Celtic-Roman and Germanic-Roman conflicts. Finally, the concrete differences regarding the context and meaning of illustrations concerning the representation especially of the Celts in modern German and French textbooks will be discussed. These differences enable insights into the respective society behind the schoolbook, into its self-image, its presentation tradition and its - national or European - concept of history.
