Abstract	Visual culture studies have shown that images not only reflect but also shape our understanding of reality, identity or memory. The images of Europe contained in textbooks are therefore crucial for an understanding of European identity. We will consider different visual constructions of Europe and European identity by analyzing two representative topic areas, Christianity and colonialism, from a historical perspective. The Gospel Book miniature represents Europe as the continent of Christian belief while the pictures of colonialism draw on the idea of Europe as the continent of civilization. Both images of Europe have been subject to change either according to national predispositions or because they have integrated transnational perspectives.
