AbstractThe main purpose of the 2008 conference was to enable the participants to give preliminary country/regional reports based on their national/regional surveys. These surveys had been conducted on the basis of a new version of the 1992-1993 questionnaire organized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In the two-day conference, international comparative and quantitative research was reported with a focus on six aspects concerning the academic profession. These constitute the core part of the questionnaire and include: careers and the professional situation, the general work situation and activities, teaching, research, management, and personal background. In addition to analysis and discussion of the similarities and differences existing among individual countries and regions, a detailed comparative study of the changes in the academic profession in Japan since the last international survey in 1992-1993 was presented.
