Abstract	This contribution... is also concerned with science education at the primary school level. The topic "floating and sinking" is used as an example for exploring primary school children's acquisition of basic physics concepts. The study systematically investigated how factors like sequencing the content, cognitively structuring teacher prompts, and visualisation help students to construct adequate concepts. Furthermore, a study on in-service teacher training courses showed that intensive tutoring that facilitated the acquisition of content knowledge enabled the teachers to teach demanding science lessons based on a constructivist approach.
