Abstract	"The developmental expectations toward children differ between countries and also between time periods. The purpose of this cross-cultural study is to consider the change of developmental expectations toward children as displayed in Japanese and German elementary school textbooks. Stories in these books have significant influence an the socialisation of children, and the behaviours displayed by the characters in these stories can be assumed to reflect the behaviours that each culture regards as suitable. Analysis of stimuli given the main characters in textbooks indicate that for Japanese children, these stimuli changed from hardship to supportive behaviour from 1960 to 2000; whereas, for children in East Ger-man stories, stimuli went from supportive behaviour to hardship, and the children in West German texts went from fewer to more hardships. These results demonstrate that the developmental expectations toward children and their means of dealing with difficulties differ across countries. The differences appear related to the political systems, recognition of perspectives an the economic growth and group-self relationship patterns in hybrid society in each country."
