| Abstract | This article at the beginning puts the question how universities in Kazakhstan can contribute to "teach democratic values such as citizenship, active participation in society, civil responsibility, cooperation, open-mindedness, tolerance and respect for other people" which are prerequisites for developing an open society? The authors "consider interactive methods of teaching as an effective way to teach democracy. How students learn as well as how teachers teach is important in creating a democratic classroom. ... There are five basic interactive strategies of teaching [which the authors consider as] approaches using interaction between a learner and teacher in the learning process: a) the problem-solving approach, b) collaborative learning, c) discussions, d)role playing, simulations, and games and e) interactive assessment."
