Abstract | This article is part of the publication of contributions delivered at the 24th annual conference of the Association for Teacher Education in Europe (ATEE), held at the University of Leipzig, 30.08.-05.09.1999. "The paper starts by stressing two contradictory points of view concerning the professionalisation of teachers: arguments of debasing the work of teachers and arguments of increasing the value of teachers' work facing the challenge of modern society. In this light, the paper gives the results of research work concerning the professional development of teachers of music. After a short introduction about the research methodology, the author tries to point out the specific problem of music teaching as it appears in interviews with teachers of music. The main problem is that teachers who want to focus their teaching to the (supposed) musical interests of their pupils cannot be sure to have success as the pluralism of music styles and the dynamics of introduction in the classroom are inealenlable in their consequences an classroombehaviour of the pupils. The two teachers presented in the case studies have very different strategies to cope with this situation. One teacher tries to build up a professional distance in face of the students. The other teacher rather tries to waken the interest of the students by special "tricks" of teaching method. In the final part, the author gives some theoretical conclusions about the process of professionalisation and their practical relevance for teacher training." (DIPF/Orig.). |
