AbstractThe video project described here evolved out of the desire to provide language learners in the program with explicit feedback about their communication with target language speakers, in this case native speakers of North American English. The initial project was based on the assertion that encounters between native speakers and non- native speakers of any language can improve if learners acquire stronger conversation management strategies and greater awareness of socio-cultural pragmatics, assuming that they have reached a basic level of linguistic proficiency. lt is thought that conversations can become more successful even without a major improvement in linguistic skill per se if participants become aware of non-linguistic factors contributing to communicative success or failure. The use of video cameras permitted to document conversations between learners and target language speakers in a real setting removed from the second language classroom. By videotaping such conversations, it was not only possible to observe the students' use of language, but also their use of pragmatic strategies in conversation. More importantly, by seeing themselves on videotape and discussing the outcomes with a native informant, the students were able to test their own assumptions about their conversations.
