AbstractLike other argument inheritance phenomena, the formation of synthetic compounds is often understood as a genuine morphological or lexical process. In the article, a syntactic analysis of German synthetic compounds is proposed that is based on Baker's (1988) incorporation theory. The discussion will concentrate on the case of deverbal compounds involving the suffix -er. As has been repeatedly observed, dative, genitive, and prepositional objects are excluded from such compounds. The author tries to show that these restrictions may be derived from the Empty Category Principle, once that certain assumptions on the syntactic representation of verbal arguments are made. In essence, the author follows a recent proposal that considers dative objects to be syntactic adjuncts and that may also give a clue to the syntactic status of genitive objects. (Verlag).
