| Abstract | In this article we explore the patterns of recent ideological changes in the content of Russian secondary school textbooks in the social sciences and humanities. We compare textbooks under communism, during perestroika, and after the collapse of the Soviet regime". Elements of new ideologies since perestroika were "three categories of ideological symbols", i.e. those of reinterpretation of the communist past, those dealing with Russian national and cultural identity and those of transition to capitalism and democracy. Summed up, the textbook content "has shifted from a consistent presentation of the key dogmas of Marxism-Leninism toward the formation of a contradictory combination of the ideological symbols of nationalism, Westernization, and a reinterpretation of communism. This new ideological foundation is found to be typical for the texts published and officially recommended by the government, while privately sponsored textbooks show a more consistently pro-Western orientation".
