| Abstract | In the paper it is shown how to derive certain aspects of the syntactic behaviour of German verbs - especially the possibility of argument suppression - from their semantic properties. It is assumed that a decompositional approach expressing the thematic and aspectual structure of the verb can explain this phenomenon. In particular, the suppression of certain arguments of transitive verbs are examined: the direct object, the directional phrase of transitive verbs of motion (e. g., schieben and gießen) and the mit- phrase occuring with the so-called locative alternation verbs (e. g., bestreuen). It is argued that the possibility of argument suppression is due to lexical rules which alternate the semantic structure of the verb. These lexical rules cannot apply in general but are restricted to certain semantic groups. Here, it is shown that beyond the thematic and aspectual properties of the verb, the notion of incrementality plays an essential role for argument suppression. (Verlag, adapt.). |
