| Abstract | This article examines the consequences for Soviet science and its culture which were caused by the collapse of the USSR. It focusses on the post Soviet evolution of Russia's science. The first part describes several "cultures" of Soviet science from a political and historical point of view. The second part is dedicated to scientists and their strategies. In the first post-Soviet years the emphasis was put on "survival" and the "salvation of national science". The third part deals with newly developed mechanisms of adaptation and the way they are keeping the crisis in check, for now. (DIPF/St.). |
