Abstract | (The author) sorts out the complex process called legal socialization: how young people learn about rules, norms, and laws, how they develop attitudes concerning such matters; and how they decide that certain rules ... are legitimate regulators of their behavior. Russia was chosen as an area in which to examine the process of legal socialization because, between 1917 and 1991, it was one of the most authoritarian, repressive and undemocratic legal cultures.... (The differences of legal socialization) in Russia and America ... are fully explored ... . The opening chapters make the case for the importance of legal environment and legal context in shaping socialization. The next portion of the book describes the particular legal context of Russia, including the history of law and its enforcement, crime and delinquency ... . The remaining portions interpret the comparative data and draw conclusions and implications that are practical as well as theoretical. (DIPF/Umschlagtext). |
