Abstract | The paper describes and examines the national and regional differences in the development of the education system, and education as a means for integration of the USSR. It analyzes the regional differences in the educational structure in gender, social background, attitudes, life plans and so on. "The basic hypothesis is that the national awakening and dissolution of the Soviet Empire was caused by the policy that denied national identity ... and aimed at an entity called the Soviet people. Education was used as the major tool to implement this policy integration." The analysis is based on two longitudinal surveys called "paths of generation", which were carried out from 1983-85 and 1989-91 (embracing 60.000 students from general high schools, vocational schools, and lower-level colleges in different regions).
