Abstract	The aim of the book is to give an insight into the importance of the national context and of the various brands of nationalism in education.. Furthermore, the volume contributes to a comparison of important trans-cultural elements and trends of nationalism in education. The book draws on the experience of colleagues from 6 continents and 9 countries, and relates their knowledge from the fields of education, the social sciences, and economics... The first part of the book shows in which way political as well as market demands and forces influence the national and international context of education. Against this background parts 2-4 present case studies from North and South America, from Africa and Asia, and from the former USSR and Europe. These studies illustrate to what extent education is organized according to national interest and ideologies or international needs. Finally it is discussed in part 5 the extent to which trans-national values exist and what kind of overlapping loyalties should be supported to balance nationalism in education.
