Abstract | Youth deviancy in Japan is receiving a great deal of attention in Japanese as well as international discourse, but it is subjected to greatly varying interpretation. The discourse of international criminology tends to focus on Japan's status as a low crime society and attempts to explore the conditions that have led to this success, while the discussion within Japan tends much more to see youth deviancy as a significant problem. The goal of this article is to sketch the various threads of this discussion and to provide an explanation for the Japanese tendency to find the situation there so problematic, despite the rosy portrait painted by statistics. I argue that normative and social contexts make this tendency easier to understand. (DIPF/Orig.). |
